Technology in service of human care

Safety with Dignity Ask what happens after a possible fall—and how privacy is protected.

This guide helps families ask informed questions about optional fall-detection technology when a local community offers it. Availability, consent, data handling, and response practices must be confirmed locally.

About safety with dignity

What to know.

A bedroom fall may be unwitnessed, leaving a care team with limited information about what happened. Some communities may offer technology intended to help staff identify a possible event and review it after the fact.

The technology is only one part of the conversation. Families should understand whether it is currently available, how participation works, what the system does and does not do, who responds, and how information is handled.

Is this a good fit?

Consider these common signs.

  • Falls or unwitnessed bedroom events are part of the care conversation.
  • The family wants to understand how optional technology may support staff response and what its limits are.
  • Consent, privacy, retention, and human follow-through need clear answers.

Questions for your visit

Bring these questions with you.

  1. Is the program available in the residence we are considering?
  2. How is consent documented and changed?
  3. Who receives an alert and what happens next?
  4. What is recorded, retained, and deleted?
